Chapter 9

“Mitch? Come in? Where’s Moose and Carl?” Doug sounded over the radio.

“I don’t know. I called them in.” Mitch grabbed his walkie-talkie. “Moose? Carl? Come in?”

Neither of them replied. Mitch called again but there was still the same static emptiness.

Jake saw the worry on Mitch’s face. “We need to get out there.”

“Doug, we’re going to check. Stay where you are. Del, take Si and check the front for the boys. Don’t get in sight of the truck.”

Del nodded. “Will do.”

Before he could move there was a knock at the door. Jake and Mitch looked at each other. Mitch motioned to Jake.

Jake nodded and called out, “Who is it?”

“It’s Moose. Can I come in?”

Mitch and Jake looked at each other. The door was unlocked and Moose knew it. Mitch indicated to Del to get behind the door and Si to get into position then he nodded to Jake.

“Hold on,” Jake called out. Mitch went to the door and rattled the bolts as if he was unlocking the door.

Then he opened it, getting out of the way.

Moose was framed in the doorway, his eyes wide and his hands held high. He blinked rapidly and Jake nodded.

“Come in, Moose.” Jake made his voice as cheerful as he could.

“Whoever’s behind the door, show yourself.” A voice Jake didn’t recognize barked out the order.

Del stayed where he was but Mitch moved into sight, his hands held up like Moose. “I’m here.”

As they came into the bar, Jake saw the figure of a man behind Moose. From the tension in Moose’s shoulders, Jake knew he had a weapon of some sort in his back.

“You all right, Moose?” Mitch asked, his voice calm and controlled.

Moose nodded tightly. “Yeah.”

“What about Carl?”

“He got jumped. He’s unconscious but he’s alive.”

“Stop talking,” the stranger barked.

Moose gasped and coughed. “Quit jabbing that thing in my ribs.”

“You don’t need to hurt him,” Mitch said. “What do you want?”

For the first time, Jake got a good look at the man. Something about his raggedly trimmed strawberry-blond hair and dark-rimmed glasses stirred a distant memory. “Who are you?”

“His name’s Marshall,” Moose said. “He’s one of the new deputies.”

“You’re a police officer?” Mitch looked as confused as Jake felt. If this was police business why the hell did he attack Carl and Moose?

Marshall ignored Mitch and stared at Jake. “Hand over Riley Ward and I’ll leave you alone.”

In one smooth move, so Marshall didn’t see, Jake closed his fingers around his gun and slid it into the back of his waistband. “What do you want with Riley? Did you help him escape?”

Marshall barked out a harsh laugh. “You’re joking, right?”

“Then you were the one shooting at him?”

“I was trying to recapture him.”

“By shooting him?” Jake said flatly.

Beads of sweat ran down Marshall’s temples and Jake wasn’t sure if the man was on a drug high. “He’s worth the same dead or alive. Now hand him over or I’ll arrest you all for aiding a convicted felon.”

“Why hurt Carl and Moose?” Ignoring Mitch’s annoyed growl, Jake moved from behind the bar.
